TV on the Radio

TV on the Radio earned widespread critical acclaim for its eclectic, genre-bending sound incorporating elements from noise rock, art-punk, gospel and electronic music.

Vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and multi-instrumentalist David Sitek formed TV on the Radio in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 2001, compiling the group's first LP, OK Calculator, from material recorded in Sitek's bedroom studio. When Sitek produced Yeah Yeah Yeahs' hit major-label debut Fever to Tell, other indie bands clamored for his services, also boosting interest in TVotR's music, and in 2003 the group issued Young Liars on Chicago's Touch and Go Records.

Singer Kyp Malone joined TV on the Radio ahead of the band's proper debut LP, the acclaimed Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. TVotR followed Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Interscope Records to release 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain, a staple on critics' best-of lists; the album produced the minor hit "Wolf Like Me" and set the stage for 2009's Dear Science, widely considered the group's masterpiece. Bassist Gerald Smith died of lung cancer nine days after the 2011 release of TV on the Radio's fifth LP, Nine Types of Light; the surviving members reconvened three years later for Seeds.
