Jones became a member Chic at 19 as a keyboardist and recorded on several of the band's hits including "Le Freak" and "Good Times." He also played on Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" and Diana Ross' "Upside Down."

Jones also performed with with Talking Heads, the Tom Tom Club and Chaka Khan, and wrote Jeffrey Osborne's "Stay With Me Tonight" in 1983.

Jones also worked with Spike Lee on the music for several films.
