The Supremes

The Supremes were one of the most successful acts of the 1960s, launching 12 singles to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 including the classics "Stop! In the Name of Love," "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Someday We'll Be Together."

The Supremes (originally the Primettes) formed in Detroit in 1959, bringing together vocalists Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. They initially found success backing up more established Motown Records artists but soon caught the attention of the label's founder, Berry Gordy Jr., who recognized their potential as a leading act.

The Supremes released their breakthrough single "Where Did Our Love Go" in 1964, scoring their first number one and gaining worldwide recognition for their sophisticated harmonies, choreographed dance routines and sleek fashion sense. Over time, the glamorous Ross emerged as the group's lead vocalist, which caused dissension in the ranks: in 1967, Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong due to personal and professional difficulties, and the group's name officially changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes, reflecting her growing prominence.

Ross left the Supremes in 1970 to mount a successful solo career, and Jean Terrell took over as lead vocalist. The trio's commercial success began to decline in the years to follow, however, and in 1977 - a year after the tragic passing of the troubled Florence Ballard - the Supremes split. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
